Chitting

Hello!

I have never had a problem chitting seed potatoes, but this year............. nightmare

Followed all the usual rules (which have never let me down), they just don't seem to want to know.

Does anyone have any tips? Do I need to chitt them at all

Mine arn't chitting either but they are gonna get burried in March either way.

Where are you guys chitting them? Mine have just been dumped on the dining room table and are doing ok. That's despite a norty mousie having a sly nibble at a Rooster and my new cat playing with an Aran Pilot!

Mine are set out in egg boxes in the unheated southfacing conservatoire.

I am cheating a little bit and have placed mine into a heated room. Almost every variety has started to chit within 7 days.

Yep, mine are in the spare room, in labeled open boxes in front of the window. The heating only just is on in that room. All chitting away great.

Mine are going great guns in the kitchen.

The slowest one was the Wilja but even these are sprouting now.

2nd Earlies and Maincrop are chitting nicely. Earlies ? Not a sign !

All mine a go go after 5 days. North facing windowsill so no direct light in dining room with heating on. Trying the Moon Planting and they've certainly started off quicker this year!

I've had mine on various windowsills for about 3 days and they're already starting to wake up.

I have never chitted potatoes before so i think i will be moving mine into a warmer room as mine are showing no signs as of yet!!

I wonder - how much difference does it actually make?

When I was a young'un I used to lend a hand on the farm up the road from my granny's and I'm pretty sure they didn't have acres and acres worth of potatoes all laid out in indirect light to chit. From what I remember (it was about 15 to 20 years ago) they just emptied sacks of spuds onto some special sort of plough and got them in the ground. I don't recall there being anything short of a huge haul under each plant when digging-up time came around.

So - big difference or not?
Anyone experimented with half of their crop chitted and half not to see what difference it makes in equal conditions?

I don't chit maincrops (neither do the farmers) but I do chit earlies (So do the farmers)!
