Is it true that peas won't climb the same pole twice? I just read this on a post on the river cottage site.

Sounds an interesting one. But since in reality the same pea won't grow twice and you plant new ones each year I guess it wouldn't be a problem. Can't wait to see what all the more experienced gardeners say to this!!

Scuse me, but aren't we supposed to rotavate the crops? Surely you wouldn't put peas in the same place twice??? (or do you move the sticks)

Pea (and bean) sticks or canes can be re-used if sound. When the crop is finished pull up the sticks, clean them and store in the shed. Yes, you should rotate crops if you can - it stops build up of diseases and pests, and different crops need different levels of nutrients.

                      Hi all,
This is slightly off the thread but, we have just pruned our autumn fruiting raspberries, I was thinking of using the canes we've cut off for bean and pea sticks. working on the principle that the thorns might help deter molluscs. can anyone forsee any problems. (canes taking root and producing rassies is classed as a bonus not a problem)

                      Cheers

Hi Compostman, you shouldn't have any problems apart from ruining your hands. I always remember my Dad using sticks for his beans which he had got from a local farmer who had been coppicing. Unfortunately the sticks rooted and grew but the beans didn't

I would wonder if they will be stong enough to support a heavy crop of peas or beans?
