container squash

im at a sad time as ive just got one little winter squash left to eat from last year. Although they are my favourite veg, i decided not to grow anymore as i didnt quite realise just how much space they took up in the garden and i simply dont have room

that was untill i just got a veg catalogue with a squash called 'windsor' thats compact and ideal for containers (a perfect solution for my lack of space). the problem is that they are just selling the plants not the seeds and i cant seem to find the seeds anywhere.

So i wondered if anyone knew any other varieties of squash that dont go rambling off and are ideal for growing in containers?

Have you thought about growing upwards? I grew spaghetti squash up a trellis last year so the floor space it took up was only 12-18" around. I grew one in a large pot and one in the ground. They'd probably go quite well up a post too.

There are bush versions of Delicata and Buttercup, thoguh you could easily grow BOn-BOn up a trellis, I had it clambering over a fence on my plot last year..... Put something for them on the south wall fo the shed and they should be very happy....

Golden Nugget is the only pumpkin variety I know of that remains a bush, albeit bushy, so ought to do well in a container if potted up well and given adequate water. I can send you some seeds if you want to PM me your details. It's a good tasting pumpkin too!

I was also going to suggest growing them upwards. I've got no idea how it's done (or indeed if it just does it itself) but I've seen pictures of pumpkins growing up and over arches and pergolas.

I'd agree...go skyward...no limit to the space above your garden!!...they tend to need too much water for pots.

found this as I searched windsor, wondering if anyone had grown them, I also saw them in catalogue and as my garden is proving to be a bigger task than I had first thought was looking for some dwarf plants, DT browns sell the seeds. Think I might give them a try

I am planning to grow squash this year, but just realised how much room they may now take up! May have to rethink the idea.

So, have the Golden Nugget seeds arrived yet? It's been 10 days or so, and airmail to the UK generally only takes a week, so I figure they ought to have arrived by now.

I had very little success with container grown squash last year, the yield was very low as I think they dried out too quickly, so mine are going back into the ground this time. It would seem sensible to provide support so that they don't sprawl all over the place!

Will most squash plants grow up something? I've got some sweet dumpling seeds for this year but a distinct lack of raised bed space. However, there is a patch next to the greenhouse backed by trellis that I could use if it will be suitable.

Do squash and pumpkin plants climb on their own or do they need tying/training to whatever you want them to grow up?
