Onion set protection

Do they need it? Planning on planting out my sets, and prob garlic but wondering if I should lay fleece over it? Had a couple -2 nights so not sure if the sets and cloves are hardy?

Definitely don't need protection from frost, only to stop the birds and mice pulling them up. I start mine in celltrays and plant them out when they have developed good roots.

I also do what Rusty Lady does; just gets them kicked off earlier.

I have a frame with chicken wire on it draped over the bed. Keeps birds and cats off.

My onions and garlic have been in since Oct without any protection, so pretty hardy. Have also got some in pots in the greenhouse for planting out later once frosts have eased off. These hopefully will give me some bigger onions.

I thought that sets exposed to frost have more chance of bolting - unless they're heat treated which are supposed to have less chance of bolting - anyway, I'm not putting mine in until things warm up a tad or two.
