Comfery and Potatoes

Comfrey has only just started to grow again after its winter hibernation. It's never ready when you want to plant spuds.

I use the leaves as a mulch (but it does encourage slugs to hide underneath) or more often, as a liquid feed.

Grass clippings go down as a mulch too, in thin layers.

Same here with the comfrey although there are some tiny shoots starting to appear. I totally agree with paulottie - jersey royals from supermarkets do not taste like they used to.

What a shame we are poles apart. It's late summer here Down Under and my comfrey is just roaring along with loads of foliage. If I could get it to you northern hemisphere grapes without too much difficulty or damage in transit I would.

I bought and planted some Bocking 14 lComfrey ast year, 5 slips of ebay. I dug one up to propogate more and the roots were huge!! Had enoough to propogate 10+ plants Planted aroun the back of my composters and manure pile - I think they will like it there!

Hmmm maybe I plant my spuds late, but I stick a comfrey leaf underneath each one when they go in the deck.
When I left home a couple of days ago there was the first sign of growth. By the time I get back, there will (inshallah) be leaves which will be picked to go under the tubers. Seems to work fine for me, although have never done a test to compare a difference.
Which I will now endeavour to do this year!!

I have already started planting spuds so there was no chance of comfrey for them. If the comfrey grows before the last spuds go in then I will use it, If not it will be a cemfrey feed later on. I think I will probably have the same problem with rhubarb to stop club root on the cabbages.
