I've planted 12 crowns which I bought from Wilkinsons so far for a family of 4, I will have room to put more as I've got 2 half allotments. Maybe I'll have a go with seed.

It's not difficult Bex. Just takes a year longer. It's easier to stand the wait if you've already got a bed!

I start In 3" pots and move to 7" pots....best to wait two years to see off the females as they don't always show in year one...least I can't tell the difference before flowering.

Thanks Paulottie - Thick question I know, but how do you tell the difference between the genders? And I'd want to keep only males?

As far as I'm aware you can tell which are female by which ones flower but there may be other ways.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

We have thirty in a bed in its just about enough for two of us, just as long as we are not overly greedy.

Well 12 will have to do for this year, as the rest of the bed is busy already.
I will sow some more and then fill the bed next year with 12 more.

No wonder it's such an expensive veg to buy, even when it's local and in season!

I told a lady off (who knows me so it was ok lol) in Tesco the other day buying some in from Argentina or somewhere from the supermarket, she said she hadn't even looked at where it was from!

Even I might be able to tell the difference then LOL

Some years ago, I had about 20 plants and kept chickens.

I remember meals of new potatoes, asparagus and poached egg with lashings of butter.

Surely the whole point of having an allotment and growing vegetables is to enjoy a wide variety of fresh and varied produce.

One could grow 2000 asparagus plants in an average plot!

I have an asparagus web page

Depends if you like or love the stuff! We had a bed 25yds x 2yds for 3 of us and it really wasn't enough! Once you get a taste for it, butter or hollandaise is obvious, but cold ham and asp. tart (from Turin) is delish!, then there's soup, stir-fry, roast.....I only draw the line at ice-cream!! There's the most wonderful pub/restaurant at Temple Guiting in the Cotswolds called 'The Plough at Ford' The Plough Inn at Ford - Welcome
they specialise in all sorts of grass recipes in season, we tried to work our way through the menu last year, but ran out of money!!

Oh dear I only planted 10 plants last year - not enough it seems from these comments.

Ah no problem - I've more land now.

I've 5 of jersey knight's and crimson pacific's - so what type do you asparagus addicts prefer?

Nice to see a comment from Dr George. I still envy your organisation - are you sure it's an allotment?
