Going on from the 'How many asparagus?' thread, I've decided I haven't got enough so was going to have a go from seed thinking this has got to be cheaper than buying crowns. Anyway is Nicky's Nurserys any good?

I just posted in the other thread for you...
I haven't used Nicky's nurseries......What variety are you thinking of?
I have Gilnlym, Grolim and backlim seed but it will be F2. PM if you want some.
I still rate Conniver's collosal as an excellent OP variety. I would like to try the pacific 2000 if I had some seed.

Nicky's are excellent - not used them for asparagus but had some very good salad and chilli related thigns from them in the past.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Hi there, I have to be honest & say that I have never used Nickys seeds, however last year I purchased 50 Gijnlim seeds for £11 including P&P from seeds by size, the service was great & I had 100% germination. Very pleased. The trouble is I am impatient so also brought some crowns earlier this year.

I guess maybe 10 ukp for the compost and pots perhaps....call it nine and you've got asparagus plants for 50p each.... for an all-male heavy-cropping variety I'd say that was a bargain cos it's a big old asparagus bed, or a decent one and flog a bunch of plants off...

Fair enough...but re Gjlnlym seed You'll be lucky if they all turned out male....whatever it says on the tin.
Otherwise I wouldn't have any seed!!
Hope you do well with the nursery business. I tend to give my spare plants to others...that way I cover some of my own failures with return favours. Otherwise I give them to the fête.
I found that the cheapest running heating I've got is an Eltex propane greenhouse heater.

I have been given some asparagus plants by someone at work. When I plant them out should I plant them out any differently to normal plants. I know when planting crowns that you have plant them in a specific mannor, but what about plants growing in pots?
ThanksBW
James
I like to try, might not get far, but I like to try.
