I can't recommend a particular cabbage for you - you will have to find the best for your growing circumstances - but here is a quick look at winter keeping cabbages.
I'm interested in peoples suggestions myself, as I'd also like to grow something for this. The Hollands Winter White on Marshalls looks the kind of cabbage I'd buy for this.
I grew Filderkraut myself last year, but they grow huge, and we weren't that keen on the flavour. Look spectacular though!
Life is brief and very fragile, do that which makes you happy.
I also looked at the marshalls site & the holland winter white extra late did sound promising. Unfortunately it is ready for harvesting between October & the following April. Rodima has a similar season. Not exactly salad weather. I would like a cabbage that heads spring & summer so I can make coleslaw for picnics,BBQs etc. I doubt the Holland winter white or rodima would produce a reasonable sized head in time for when I want them. So I will try the greyhound.
Many thanks for your advice

We love a bit of salad in the winter, after weeks of soups and stews. January is traditional for losing a bit of flab, so the shredded cabbage comes in very useful (stir fries as well as salads)

Hi there pipscaraid many thanks for your very kind offer. However I brought myself a pack this morning before I had read your posting My daughter picked me up this morning & took me to the local garden centre where she treated my OH & I like lord & lady muck. I got some nice plants & seeds followed by lunch in the on site restaurant. Had a really nice mothers day. So with all due respect I must decline you offer of some seeds, but would love to say how much I appreciated you offer.
Kind regards
Sheila
