  • Leek dilemma-advice please!

As some of you know, we created a bit of a growing area last summer in part of our field.
As we started preparing late, everything was late going in.

Now then- my dilemma is that we have an area 4' x8' full of baby leeks which were sown late April. - the best of them are pencil sized

So- if I leave them in- are they likely to bolt and flower ?( as technically it's their 2nd year).
I can buy 100 for 5 Euros bigger than them on the market which are meant for this year.
Basically I don't want to dig up if they should eventually do well- but can't afford the space just to 'wait and see' when for 5 E I have a guaranteed crop- on better prepared soil.
Gut feeling says dig up and eat what I can and start afresh

Baby leeks are delicious. Dig and eat what you can.

I did this and they all bolted.

But, then I pulled them all up and some of the roots were left in, they all grew normally.

So, if I had a choice I would get new ones for this year and eat the baby ones. If I had no choice, I would replant the ones you have and chop them right down.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

Yep, eat the titchy ones and get a new crop in. They are entirely likely to bolt on you.

I thought you could cut leeks at ground level & they would re-grow.

I've got some ickle ones from last year which I'm pulling now (well not now as I'm on here but you know what I mean............) and they are truly delicious.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
