A little birdie told me you need to make sure you have a full month of minus 10 degree tempratures to ensure a good garlic crop. Am I too late now?

Just been having a look on Google for you and came across this site it might help to clear things up for you. I always plant mine on Bonfire Night.
When to Plant Garlic

Well, I planted mine out on 13th March last year, which is only four days past, and it did really well! We didn't have any frost at all after I'd planted it, as far as I can remember, and I certainly didn't put it in the fridge or anything, as until the end of last year I'd never heard about the cold thing. (I heard it on the Grapevine ).
I'd say go for it, provided you get it in in the next week-ish, it's worth a try?Life is brief and very fragile, do that which makes you happy.

When all that is over they start selling it again so I would imagine this variety is suitable for spring sowing,.

I have a bunch of Autumn garlic in pots in the garden. Apparently they grow bigger but don't keep as well. I only did Spring planted garlic last year and just finishing them off now. Some of the cloves had shrivelled up a bit but mostly ok. The shallots from last year are still looking good.
