I was flicking through the Marshalls catalogue last night and they have 'Spring Planting Garlic'.

Lautrec Wight (hardneck variety) and Solent Wight (softneck). Both of which they suggest are suitable for planting in Feb/March, and harvested in June-August.

Marshalls garlic cloves are dispatched January to late March.

WE did autum garlis at the lotty, shooting well. Got seduced in wilkos by the garlic recently! Bought a few cloves of usual garlic, and some elephant garlic put in pots theother week, shooting nicely. I also out it in the fridge for a few days and about 20 mins in th freezer a day. Read that in a thread on here! Will let you know if it works!

I have a bulb from last year which has many green "tentacles" sticking out of t right now. I plan on splitting it into cloves and planting them out on the plot this weekend. We have very clay like soil. How deep ought they be buried?

You want the tip (white papery bit, not the green shoots), just poking above the soil.

I would have a go and see what happens. Spring is late this year.

It's one of two theories that I've seen regarding that single-clove chinese round garlic that Lidl sells sometimes... either:

Small centre cloves of normal garlic, too small to flower, spring sown so they don't split up or...

It's some wierd strain that gets grown from seed in a single season like seed-grown shallots....

Well I've got three cloves that someone gave me last year that I planted at rougly the same time as the rest of the garlic in autumn and they've come through the winter OK (as has the rest of the garlic)... If they' flower I'll try to segregate them and save the seed and sow that and see what happens.... also need to remember to save some small inner cloves next time I'm doing a load of garlic and getting them out to see hwo they do...
