Just treat them like you would ridge cucumbers. Grow them up some sort of frame outside and water them well in dry weather, you'll get plenty of fruit from them.

Gherkins are just small, tough ridge cukes... I grew Piccolo di Parighi last year (and will grow them again this) and in the past have grown Venlo Pickling and always outdoors ... last year two plants got me enough for 5 1lb jars of gherkins as pickles and 8lbs of picallilli...... outdoors... sow indoors mid april, harden of fand plant out at the end of May ....simples (I'm in Oxford BTW, YMMV)

I'm trying Gherkin (Cornichon de Paris) for the first time this year... sowed early this month and they are just starting to come up now. The packet says they go outdoors and to plant them out in May.Last edited by pjh75; 21-03-2010, 09:03 AM.pjh75

How weird is that? I thought I'd replied, but it disappeared! I wasn't very successful with my gherkins last year, hoping for better results this time. the Cornichon plants I grew up canes and I would say they got to about 5 feet high. Are you growing in the ground or in containers?Granny on the Game in Sheffield

Hello rustylady and Florence Fennel, thanks for the reply. I’ll be starting them indoors before moving them outside to some large pots. I’m a little concerned that they don’t like over watering, but you can’t change the British weather.
Thanks again.
