Welcome to the vine, you will find loads of great and often conflicting advice on here, but it's a great place.
I planted garlic last year in late march and got a decent crop in July.
This season I planted some before Christmas (shortest day) from last years crop and some earlier this month that was bought from the garden centre.
Most places round here weren't selling garlic to plant until February, so go for it.
I have also had sucess growing in containers, as has been mentioned, just don't let it get too dry.

I put some onion sets and garlic cloves in a couple weeks ago, looked this morning and the garlic is around an inch high.. shocked! No slug damage yet, which is good as I've no defence setup yet!

I grew 70 onions in 12 90cm window boxes last, all apart from the ones who were a little shaded grew well, i trying garlic in the same this year. I have extra deep troughs for shallots so it will be interesting to see the results.

I planted my garlic and onions today and on the garlic packet, it said to plant March/April or it may have been Feb/March.

Totally off-topic, but my boyfriend laughed at me today, as I was wearing old clothes getting ready for gardening and I had on an old Saints (St. Helens Rugby League) shirt that has got my favourite player's name on the back - Gardner!

              Garlic Help Please!!!!!!!!!!!

              Hi Folks
I have planted 3 cloves in a 3inch square pot & left it outside & pretty much to its own devices.
Today i have noticed 2 of the three are sprouting & the roots are showing out the bottom of the pot so they obviously need potting on.
What Final sized container would you suggest i move them in to (i have no garden) could i pot them on & keep them all together in a Morrisons Flower bucket which is about 9/ 10inches.
              Thanks for all your help.

I have my garlic in 40cm window boxes 3 to a box, they should be fine in the flower buckets.
