is it too late for sweet peppers?

I've just seen that I haven't sown any california wonder (sweet pepper). I know peppers need a long growing season but it's still COLD outside.

Will there be enough time for any fruit on it to ripen?

I hope there is still time... all my peppers (sweet & chilli) and most tomatoes failed to germinate so I will be re-sowing, probably tomorrow.

It might be cold outside but ther's nothing to stop you from gettting them started indoors , Keep them in until end of may / early june.

Yeah you sow inside, like chillies, in fact treat them like chillies full stop.

Saying that, my peppers have always been pathetic and this is the first year I'm not even bothering growing them at all.

I'll second that Womble. I'm OK with chillies but can't get decent fruit on sweet peppers and they take up too much room. So I've given up.

If you have a greenhouse for them to go in when they grow up, then go for it!

Hope not 'cos I haven't sown any yet. I'm four weeks behind with everything this year, but will go ahead with my planting plans (such as they are) and what works, works. Always worth a go at this time of year.

If growing undercover it should be alright. If growing outside you might not have enough time for them to ripen but should get green peppers.

You could always buy some baby plants, I noticed our local garden centre was selling four very tiny pepper plants for £1.99. These would need to be kept on a windowsil for a while yet.

I can't answer your question being a total newbie but I just wanted to add that I noticed yesterday that Wilco's were selling 4 little pepper plants for £1.49. Dont know what varieties but might be worth a look if you have one near you.

Still not to late to start peppers and tomatoes in the warmth of a kitchen windowsill or heated propagator.

the seeds i sowed together tomatoes and chillies failed to germinate. However there are a couple of seeds now germinating from the fresh batch, i sowed few days ago.. it seems to me that sweet pepper need even higher temperature than chillies

Thanks all, I might germinate a few this year. Lots of the peppers I grew last year didn't ripen so I wasn't going to try again but didn't want to give up so easily

Interesting that people are talking about it being too late for peppers. Up here I wouldn't normally dream of sowing them before late March and I usually get a great crop from the unheated greenhouse. I sowed toms, cukes and peppers indoors early this month and the only ones that failed to germinate are the California Wonder peppers. Serves me right for trying to get one over on nature. I'll try another lot this weekend which is the proper time of year in this part of the world.

Same here, it's still down to just above freezing at night - in fact the gritters were out spreading salt on Saturday evening. I have started some in a heated propagator and a sandbox but I won't be starting my sowing in earnest until this weekend.

Thanks for the info, i was wondering about the peppers that i hadn't sown yet. Glad to see i'm not the only one that's forgotten.
