I have a question about potting on. Do I need to take out the seedling or plant the whole pot-shaped compost?

And another question, actually. Do I just transplant them when they all grow their first real leaves or is it different for each plant?

You should be potting on when the roots start coming out the bottom of the pot. Then just go up a size: don't pot tiny plants into huge pots or the soil goes sour

You could pot them into a JI with a higher number, maybe a JI2. Multipurpose is probably what most of us use but I do think the JI composts wet better.

I've potted up tom's from small pots to a few in big pots (save space for now)....i 'worked out' that its easier to fill the new pot with MPC then use a pen to create a hole to pop the seedlings in......not to try and put compost around the seedling whilst holding it.

As Two Sheds said, I always find that it's easier to wait until the current pot shows some roots out the bottom before poting up.
That way the rootball should slide out of the old pot and retain it's shape ready to pop into a larger pot with the minimum of root disturbance.
If you're able to prick out the seedling from the smaller pot then it still had room to grow and should have been left a while longer.

Are you potting on, or pricking out? Where are your seedlings now - lots in one pot or tray, or one per small pot?
