Didn't mean to insult your organisational skills there!...I have always thought, 'I can remember' and then things get out of hand...still do occasionally...Tomatoes at potting on are the worst!

Just a word of caution that's all, I have learned the hard way...I have melted 1/2 wound extension leads with heaters attached, fallen over them causing damage to plants, greenhouses and myself. I have had shocks....luckily nothing ever burned down....You could still have a cuppa you know... There are camping lights, stoves, heating. Gas I find cheaper and cleaner than paraffin. Although the heat is quite damp. I do understand- heaters with fans are good for circulation and electric props great especially with thermostat or timer attached...just be careful eh!

I thought I was organised. I read up on stuff (it being my first year growing anything and all) and wrote dates on my calendar telling me when to plant things. Then I read some more. And more and all my dates were out. I've sown my tomatoes and my cucumbers too early for a start.

And now I read this thread and realise that my dvd writing pen that I've used for writing on my white plastic labels might not be waterproof. Humph ;o)

My problem is I'm running out of years...
Aye, I am running into that problem too, Bigmally ! When I was a professional gardener's gopher it was relatively simple, turn up of a morning and he would say, go there, do that, and having previously been shown what to do I did it. (If I had enough gorms to remember how. )
That of course was because all the beds were made, the infrastructure was in place, everything except the actual growing was organised.
Doing it for myself I find myself on the getting more organised as time goes by - but it is a bit like going up the down escalator, as every time I end up with a new place to garden, I am juggling priorities and end up spending time and effort creating beds when I should be organising seedlings, cold frames, etc. Having very variable energy levels in Spring really doesn't help.
But gradually I am learning to make things easier on myself. I now have self watering seedlings for example, courtesy of two identical stacking dessert tubs, the top one with soil and seeds, holes pierced in the bottom, the lower one with water/worm wee, sitting below it. And I don't get hung up on the calendar - I have a book which tells me the germination temperatures (have it saved as a webpage too) and I just keep an eye on the temperature and conditions outside. I actually do follow that old maxim, "Sow according to conditions, not the calendar" - simply because I have no greenhouse !
Oh, how I wish for a permanent garden or allotment ! It looks like this is going to be another summer in a temporary garden. I may even have to come back to harvest, having moved house again.
There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.

Head-hunted member of the Nutter's Club - can I get my cranium back please ?
