  • Best waxy potato variety?

    Hi All

I have tried growing potatoes in newly cultivated ground (was lawn) last year and the year before but the potatoes, although plentiful, have nearly all turned out to be terrible on boiling, disintegrating in the water. Any tips on which are the best sort to grow would be appreciated.

    Many thanks

Desiree is a great all rounder, Down Under. Other good waxies are Pink Eye (a Tasmanian variety), Charlotte (a fabulous French variety), Dutch Cream and Nicola to name just a few.

Do you want to grow a salad potato, Palmers Patch? If so then Pink Fir Apple are pretty hard to beat (but the yield is not huge!)
If you are looking for an early such as Jersey Royal (not for growing in Staffs!) then you may want to try Rocket which is popular this year. But you'd better get them started soon!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Neither Jersey Royal nor Rocket is available Down Under. Oh, I wish!

Instead of boiling the potatoes and loosing flavour and vitamins, try microwaving.

Also try steaming the spuds instead of boiling - it is more gentle and they hold their form better.

Juliette were the best tasting I grew last year, much better than International Kidney (Jersey Royals). Growing them again this year, but lots more than last time. Trying PFA and and Charlotte this year for the first time.

I agree Jilly ...Juliette one of my favourites too fantastic flavour.... other good waxy girlie named earlies include Nicola and Charlotte.

mid -crop Anya as suggested is much less irritatingly knobbly than PFA small plants and a better flavour too.

Main...Rattes are the king of the salad spud...again not quite as higgledy-piggledy as PFA white skin and waxy flesh...flavour to die for.....unfortunately difficult to find this year think the Scottish seed crop had probs..had to get mine from France.

Accent and accord for me this year. I had a small amount of accent last year and they were the only ones that behaved themselves, they cooked well and i never got scab. Accord are meant to be an improvement on accent, so i gotta give them a go.

Pink Fir Apple is the best spud ever.... don't get hung up on the idea that because it's described as a salad it's an early potato.... it isn,t, it's a late main...... Makes good chips and a spectacular roastie.... roast PFA in a yorksire batter is my own invented dish which I call "Salamanders in a subterranean setting"....

I grew Charlotte and PFA last year. Neither need half as long in the pan as the spuds you buy.

I tried jogging, but I couldn't keep the ice in my glass.
