Lots of allotmenteers around me have had theirs in for a few weeks now. I've got 4 bags in the GH that were planted up over the past 5 weeks. I'm putting the rest (Int. Kidney, Maris Peer, King Edward and Isle of Jura) in the lottie either today (if it stops raining) or at the weekend.

First earlies last weekend, second this coming weekend if the weather's up to it. Then I still have to plant my 'home grown from true seeds' ones - all except the one of each that went in tubs. I think I shall sow some more true seed this year.

        Aaaaargh!!

I put my first earlies (Accent) in on Saturday, and I'm way further north than anyone whose posted on this thread so far. Saturday was fine and sunny, now it's blowing a gale and almost sleeting.

        Will they be OK?????

Was hoping to get my second earlies (Nadine) in this weekend, should I wait?

I did my firsts and most of second earlies last weekend into the ground. The rest of them will be going in pop up bags this weekend if I get round to it

I told you I'm always a few weeks behind

I spoke to the girl in the farmshop-she said that they should be planting their tatties now-I still have to wait as it was snowing this morning when I left to work

I have a patch of ground in Aberdeen where I will be growing tatties this summer, I started planting last Saturday. The only thing that stopped me from doing them all was lack of time.
As long as they don't have fresh growth exposed to air frosts they should be all right. You can always put fleece over them to begin with, if you are short of opportunities to plant like I am, and need to put them in on a specific date that might be too early.
Aberdeen has a temperature inversion layer which is well-nigh permanent, so between the Don and the Dee, and all the way inland to Bieldside/Camphill, there is not likely to be lying snow or air frost unless the temperatures elsewhere are really wintery.
I'm not going to put my Crathie ones in this week as I had hoped though, it is blizzarding outside right now, and anyway of course if the soil is too wet when you dig it you are likely to trash its structure, squeeze out the air pockets and make it all claggy/muddy.

I thought that it didn't really matter if they went in when it was a little cold. Isn't the big problem frost killing off new above soil growth?
Having said this, I got a bit behind a popped mine in last week.

As a matter of interest, why are some of you planting your maincrop so long after your earlies? I thought the difference was the maturing time, ie maincrop took longer to mature, rather than the planting time.

What a turn up for the books! It was pouring down earlier and forecast to get worse. 12pm and it stopped, thought I'd grab the opportunity to plant my earlies and ended up putting them all in. Its lovely and sunny over here, but listening to the weather in Scotland and it sounds pretty grim!
As a bonus its a Root Veg day today and tomorrow in terms of biodynamic/moon gardening. May the force be with you!

Mine are all about chitted now so everything going into their pots in the next couple of days (with fleeces on top and if it gets really cold then I'll move the pots into the greenhouse).

Hoping to get the 'no dig' earlies in this week, but it depends on the surface soil temperature, as they sit 'on', and not 'in' it. OH needs to go and get bales of straw before I can start anyway
