leggy toms and re-potting beyond seed leaves?

I have two tomato plants that are a bit leggy. I know I can bury them deeper when I re-pot them i.e. burying the seed leaves but can I go beyond this and bury them past the first set of true leaves, they both have a couple of pairs of good leaves above this?? Also can I do the same with cucumbers?

Since I pick the tops out of toms and bung them in to root on then potting on past the true leaves shouldn't be a problem. I have read that cucumbers don't like being potted deep but I have done it - try it with one and see how it goes. Be mean with the watering until you are sure it has rooted from the stem as they are more liable to rot than toms.

The only thing with planting past the seed leaves is that the side shoots will grow from under the compost. They may well root as well, then you can take off ready rooted plants
I have planted cucumebrs deep before, my Mum always used to, and I didn't know they were liable to rot until a couple of years ago. I think it's more of a problem in cold wet compost, so I'd go with Shirley on this and advise watering cautiously.

Tomatoes root from anywhere....naturally grows like ivy really! bury them as deep as you like....hydroponic commercial production is often done by lying the plant in the trough as its trusses are picked...they can be yards and yards long....the larger and better the root systen the better the fruit.

Cukes will often rot at soil level...all received wisdom and experiance is that you never bury them deeper than original level or water from the top.

Thanks guys. I will try the toms but leave the cucs. I have a few spares and as Flum says I could sow some more.
