  • Pre-germinated peas question.

I've pre germinated my peas this year (after huge success with beans last year) but ended up having to plant the sprouted seeds out during the huge cold snap last week. They were protected with fleece and put in an unheated greenhouse during this, but still will have gotten fairly cold.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how long it should be before I see the shoots coming up? Kinda worried that I might have killed/shocked them with the cold weather beyond all recovery...

Spose on the plus side it worked a treat (had near 100 percent germination even with the four year old seeds), so if I have to resprout it's not a huge panic!

I would think with the protection of a greenhouse they'll be fine. Don't forget that what you saw coming out of the pea when you germinated it is a root. This has to go down and produce little side roots then the shoot comes up. So even pre-germinated, I reckon you're lookig at a fortnight. Peas are reasonably hardy things.

      Ah, that's great, thanks.

(One batch are the Latvian peas I got sent from garden organic, so was really hoping I didn't have to rely purely on the remaining five for seed saving! )

I chitted my peas and planted them out about a fortnight ago. They are now 2 inches high out on the plot
