  • Two bean support questions.

Can anyone give be some advice regarding support for two bean varieties?

1 - Broad bean "Sutton". I have 8 rows on the go, the packet says they will reach approx 30cm, do they need any cane support? They are approx 10-15cm high now.

2- Climbing French bean "Cobra". Not planted yet, but getting ready!! Annoyingly the seed packet gives deatils of spacing and planting depth, but says little all about how tall they will grow!! How tall do I need to make the suport canes 8' like runner beans or something nearer 4-5'? What do you reckon?

1-not totally sure, but if you plant them offset and in a block, you might be able to get away with support around the outside because they'll support each other in the middle if that makes sense. Mine were about 60-90cm last year, and were ok without support.
2- yup, runner bean height poles.

Broad Beans: it depends a lot on how windy your site is. My broadies tend to grow horizontally because of the wind, so I plant them in a rectangle, with a cane at each corner, and string wrapped around it all.

Cobra is a tall french bean: let it grow as tall as you can reach (that's 5 foot for me), then pinch out the tip when it gets as high as your bamboo canes.

I do the same as TS cos we get some hellish winds up here. Although the sutton is supposed to be a dwarf variety it still needs support.
