Shallots - new member - can you ????

I have some Shallot sets that are quite large and that look as if they consist of a number of bulbs (ie like Garlic) Can you , should you , split the sets (like you do garlic bulbs) and sow seperately ?? odr sow the whole bulb

split in to individual bulbs and plant - if all goes well you'll get a load of bulbs from each set come the summer
