Which type of pumpkins are they? I think most recommend sowing around April/May.

I saw a feature on the pumpkin man in the south - don't remember what his name was - and he said to sow them 2nd week in April and plant out 3rd week in May. Seemed simple enough for even me to understand so that's what I stick to!
I do the same for courgettes and summer squash as well.

That was for the southerners, Incy - you may want to adjust for climatic conditions oop norf.

As I'm quite far west, We actually have quite a mild, if wet climate here ( I suspect that being in a city makes a difference too) I will in any case be making use of the greenhouse until it's definitely warm enough outside

I think the trick is to get the balance between sowing early enough to get the little plants started off and planting out just after all danger of frost is over but before they take over the whole place!
Also I just like having simple instructions to follow!

I'm sowing on or around 23rd April - St George's Day.
But have put two pumpkin seeds and two loofahs in a tub trying to germinate them a bit early as I'm a bit impatient, it'll work against me I know!

General rule is after the risk of frost has passed.

I've sown my squash, courgettes & marrow's this bank holiday Monday...but I'm an eager beaver & have no patience , there in 3" pots, when they get a little pot bound or 2 true leaves which ever come's first, I'll pot them on into a 6" pot, I don't give them too much root room too soon, that way they put there energy into growing into big strong plants.

Im up north and my greenhouse (unheated) is keeping a nice temperature so my squash seeds will be going in at the weekend. I also give mine an extra boost by adding a layer of polythene over the top (sandwich bags work wonders). April time is my bet!!
