Grew some from seed last year but winter killed it off. I think I need to keep an eye out for some lemon grass and try putting them in water to root - ta for idea.

I've grown lemon grass from shop bought stalks. You keep them in a jam jar of water (changing the water regularly) until roots start to form. When a few roots have formed, pot the stalks up in 3.5" pots of multipurpose compost. You need to be careful potting up as roots that have been produced in water are very brittle, and if you press too hard on the compost you could snap them off.
Mine are about a year old. They have quite a few side shoots. When you want any for cooking, hust snap off one of the side shoots. They are a lot moister than the shop bought stalks.

I grew some from seed about 5 years ago but it died in the frost over winter. Sowed the other half of the packet the following year and have been keeping it going in pots ever since. Needs splitting at the moment so will keep half in the pot and plant the other half outside and let it die off next winter as I'll still have some going inside. I normally put the pot outside at the same time as I put my citrus outside (keep it in the conservatory over winter) and it's fine.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Hmm, I grew some from seed and some from shop bought last year. All but one plant died from..*blushes* neglect. It's one I grew from seed, so am hoping it hangs on. Have ordered more from an online Indian supermarket (along with some galangal, ginger and turmeric). Soon, I too shall have house plants (I usually don't bother as I don't like the foliage - but if it's edible, that's a different story).Singleton Allotments Society

Yahoo! 11 days and my cheap ones are showing roots. Not all of them of course but 3 of them have small whiskers at the base. Wish I hadn't bothered with the ones from Thailand. Well they were a fiver and I am an (honorary) Yorkshireman. Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?
Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

6 of my 8 cheapos are now showing quite long roots. 2 are not (just over 2 weeks). Of my expensive ones from Thailand, I potted them straight up and one of them, after about a month is it?, is showing new shoots on top. Can't tell how the roots are of course.
Whilst We are on about Eastern cuisine (or if it is from the Far East should that be Kwizine? ) can I just say that today some turmeric and some white turmeric (whatever that is) roots that I orderered have arrived. Don't really want to start a new thread unless people want me to keep them informed so I will just go off topic here to see if anybody wants me to let you know what happens with the 2 turmericsWhy didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?
