grew some last spring from stalks bought in tesco, didn't bother with the water rooting just put in a 4 inch pot in the propagator and it grew like a shot after a couple of weeks, although it did have a couple of dodgy moments where the outer dried an had to be cut away to allow expansion.
Decided to move up to a larger pot this march.was dead within a week probably due to low windowcill temperatures and overwatering.

Mine's going okay so far. 2 sticks bought from Tesco were in water for 2 weeks before both developed roots. Now potted up and in the greenhouse. I plan on moving them into a larger pot once established and sinking that into a flower bed for the summer - then I can excavate it over the winter and hopefully keep the plants alive.

Lemon grass leaves make a lovely herbal tea. A handful in a teapot with boiling water. Let them steep for five minutes or so. Drink. Aids digestion after a meal.

Soon, I too shall have house plants (I usually don't bother as I don't like the foliage - but if it's edible, that's a different story).
Hey, what was the online Indian store? There aren't any asian food stores near me so think I'll resort to that too, do they sell fresh turmeric root too?

my lemongrass ( from tesco- about 65p each) was bought and put in water, at about the same time this thread was started. i took them home and put it water, where it remained for a long time- a couple of monthes approx. they didnt develop roots, but little nodules, and eventually i gave up waiting, and put them into soil. from then on they really took of, and they now have long leaves about 15-18" lentgh. so hopefully, they will still be with me next spring and will really take off then. ( oh- i have kept them in a covered passageway with a glass roof, not outside)

                  Great!

                  It's worth a try then?

The plant seems to be a sort of ornamental grass, so I'll try them in a sheltered spot.

I've had more success with growing from seed to be honest. I grow on a sunny windowsill in a deep pot. Never had as much luck with getting bought ones to take root.

My £1.30 for 8 roots and my £5 for 5 are both about the same. In the cold greenhouse (door open in July) they look like lindy's. Nice shoots.
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

One of mine is growing away nicely and putting up new shoots. The other one is just sitting there.

Mine were two supermarket stalks put in a glass of water on the kitchen windowsill, water changed daily, and they started to show roots after about 3 weeks. When the roots were about 1" long I potted them into a 6" pot about 6 weeks ago and put them in the greenhouse. They've had water and one liquid seaweed feed and are now filling the pot with new shoots about 12" tall. Think they now need a bigger pot. Tried a couple of sideshoots in a Thai curry last weekend, they were much thinner and softer than supermarket bought stalks but still had the flavour.
