  • Recommend a squash

can someone please recommend a good squash for growing over an arch or wigwam? I want something with tasty fruits which don't grow too large.
I did try red kuri last year but whilst the plants were still small the leaves developed alarming yellow patches which I thought may be mosaic virus so pulled them up and burnt them.

As a family we eat a lot of squash and it would be nice to be able to grow it ourselves but space is limited and the only way I can grow a reasonable amount would be upwards. Also if it was mosaic virus would I get it again?

I grew butternut squash successfully on a trellis last year and will be making a very sturdy frame for a variety of squashes this year. I use the nets oranges etc. are bought in to hold the weight of the fruit as they grow. Tied to the frame, since they are in various colours, they look quite quirky.

Hi to everybody. My first post on this board.

i will be growing Little Gem Squash this year. They are small and green. While still young, one per person will do when cooking. When fully grown share one between two.

Got some seeds from mammoth onion.

I'm having a go at a couple of other smaller ones, Jack Be Little and Sweet Dumpling

          Buttercup!
It's similar to Crown Prince/butternut for flavour and sweetness, smooth, dense orange flesh, prolific cropper, stores well, and the fruit is a 'maneagable' size both for cooking and cultivating. It's often grown upwards. I've grown more than 25 varieties of winter squash, and Buttercup is still our firm favourite

I have more than enough seed if you'd like to try some

Both Sweet Dumpling and Festival are excellent varieties for growing up a frame. Both produce small fruits which are ideal for roasting whole.
