Will this affect the plant germination and growth...?

Hey there guys, newcomer to the forum!
I just planted my new veg in pots and am keeping them in the boiler cabinet till they germinate. I wanted to water the plants by using a spray, I emptied out the bottle which contained a multi purpose cleaner gave it a good wash out and filled it water. I lightly sprinkled some water on top of the plants but after I found out the water smelt of the cleaner?

If anything it must if been pretty diluted but will this affect the germination or the growth of my vegetables at all?

Am I right in thinking you misted the soil rather than seedlings? Some seedlings are more sensitive than others. If you just misted the soil then I suspect things will be ok.

ETA - it may just be the smell that lingers in the bottle, rather than active ingredients.

Yeh It was a misted the top soil, fingers crossed the vegetables wont come out mutated

Did you pump clean water through the nozzle when you cleaned the bottle? If not the first 2 or 3 pulls of the trigger could be pure cleaner.

I kept my first attempt at starting seeds damp using a spray - apparently I kept it too wet as almost nothing started. I've tried again, this time watering once when the seeds went in, covering the trays and then ignoring them from that point on. So far today I've potted up about 8 seedlings and I was surprised they showed up this soon.

The moral?

Don't keep it too wet.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind.
What I did was wash it out with fairy liquid and rinsed the bottle out about 4 or 5 times. I also squeesed the nozzle many times after inserting the clean water. Yet when I spray the water still smells of the multi purpose before. Oh well i'll keep it pretty dry and see how it goes

If I had the trays uncovered I'd use a spray to keep the soil slightly damp, but with them covered there doesn't seem to be any need.

Oh you mean you covered the tops of the plant pots? If so will that increase chances of germination?

I might have to defer to someone else on that one... I've just done what I'm told was a good idea.

I filled the pots with soil, put the seeds in, watered them and covered it to keep the moisture in. As soon as the seeds sprout I take the covering off and but them somewhere with good bright light.

My first try with more water and less light was a miserable failure - this time I've been amazed at the success.

Further than that I can't say much.

What are the seeds you are germinating, Deltz?

The seeds I am growing are, F1 Tiger Cross Marrows, F1 Becky pumpikns, Spinach, B and Q tomato seeds and Scarlet Emporer Runner beans. Hehe I think I grew too much but I like experiementing with different seeds

I would cover all of those to keep the humidity up - except for the beans and the spinach, which you won't need to cover. The spinach won't need any additional heat either so take it out of the boiler cupboard!

Oh I see, thanks for that but what do you suggest I cover it with? Would paper be suffice or would I need some kind of material?

Plastic bags, clingfilm, pane of glass - all of them work.

Thanks very much! Another quick question, once the marrows/pumpkin are ready to pot out where do you think I should trasnfer it to? I do not have any ground so I have pots and grow bags. Could I put them in growbags and how many per bag? Also what width of a pot will be big enough for the veggies.

Hmm - marrows and pumpkins take up a huge amount of space and to be honest I grow mine in a large bed on the allotment!! You need advice from one of the grapes who grows in containers. Why don't you put up a new thread on growing marrows and pumpkins in containers in the vegging out forum. You may get some answers there!It would also help if you put your location on your profile by editing your user CP (top left button on the menu at the top)
