radish and beetroot

Hi guys

I started off some radish and beetroot in seed trays yesterday. Is this a really stupid thing to do? Should I have done them in pots? I just wanted to get some started Can you transplant them as they sprout and get bigger?

Sorry...never grown them before and the packet didn't say!

I wouldn't have thought it'd be a problem, but they're easily grown by sowing direct. I only grow things in seed trays when I want a head start as it's easier to keep them warm inside and plant them out when the weather gets better.
Radishes and beetroot can go in the ground now.

These both germinate really easily in the ground so people usually don't bother.
However I don't see that you are going to fail with your method - as long as you transfer into their growing positions as soon as you can, once they have sprouted. Some annual veg tend to go to seed if they experience a transplant shock. (Not seen that in these two before, though).

Hi - I grew beetroot in seed trays last year and then planted out and i have to say that i had a bumper crop..................you would have never known!

I'm trying this with beetroot this time. I have sown in modules and will plant out when big enough. The radishes I put straight in the ground.

i did some beetroot in moduals and some in the ground last year,with no difference between either way,i only transplant from modules when its full of roots,its so much easier to handle,

I have always grown beetroot in mudules even though the rule is that they don't like being disturbed .

same with onions,i find it a lot easier that way,then you know where they are before the weeds drowned them lol,lazy i know,
am experimenting with a few carrotts this year,the one's in loo rolls are comming on,just got to plant them out,others both at home and the lottie,are not,will have another go direct into the ground,but line a small furrow with compost first and after,to try and stop it capping,thus giving the seeds a better chance,
i missed my carrots last year,boohooo

I sow both beetroot and radish direct, never have any problems and it's one less thing to take up modules! However so long as you don't let them get too big before you transplant then you'll probably be OK, just thinking you're giving yourself extra work.
