Is there any crop that I can plant between my rows of potatoes to make best use of the space?

Intercropping with potatoes ??

I guess it depends how far apart your rows are. I grow mine about 24" apart, and what with the constant 'earthing up' tatties will need and the final spread of the top growth, I don't have room to intercrop them.
Apart from anything else, when you harvest your intercrop, you might damage the developing potatoes.
So, I'm basically...I wouldn't intercrop if I were you, however, I'm prepared to be proved wrong.Last edited by Pumpkin Becki; 16-04-2010, 06:59 PM.

Agreement here too. If you stuck in, for example. some lettuces, you'd keep scratching them out as you earthed up. I can't see how you could make it work.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Interesting. As an experiment, I have planted 2 rows of tattie seeds 15"-18" deep in a raised bed and am leaving them to their own devices. Following on from this thread, I was wondering how something tall like say sweetcorn would fair as they are also a companion plant to tatties. My only concern would be whether the corn would be ready before the tatties needed pulling up or could they be left until the corn had finished.........decisions, decisions.Last edited by Bigmallly; 18-04-2010, 09:04 AM.sigpic“Gorillas are very intelligent, but they don't have to be as delicate as chimps -- they can just smash open the termite nest,”

Your spuds will be ready before your sweetcorn though: so when you dig up your spuds, you'll also dig up your sweetcorn
Unless you leave your spuds in the ground as maincrops, that might workLast edited by Two_Sheds; 18-04-2010, 09:07 AM.All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

When I was still in my 'row planting' period I grew Gladioli in between my tatties. I have never earthed up tatties, just plant deeply with a heavy mulch.
Now I'm going through my 'pocket planting' period I just plant everytjhing higgledy piggledy so it doesn't matter anymore! My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)
