  • Extra parsnips

Today I'm pinching out the extra parsnips in my loo roll tubes, but I feel really mean and bad about doing it especially after year when I couldn't get any to grow at all.

Do you think they would transplant if I laid them between two pieces of cardboard then slid them into a slot in the soil, or should I just close my eyes and add them to the compost heap.

what have you got to loose by trying,it is said carrotts and beetroot won't but some have had success with the later, you could also make a slot with the trowel and let it slide in,that way the tap root will have a chance at least,if it works, others will follow

I couldn't throw mine on th ecompost lat year and had some spare space so in they went (with much head shaking and tuting for other plot holders). Some did indeed fork but most grew well

Do it you can only gain !!

I've got my compost and soil sieved so I'm all ready to transplant some parsnips tomorrow and if they fork I'll use them for soup.

I suppose that's the only bonus with growing at home, no one else sees my mistakes

I tried transplanting parsnips once. It was a disaster. they didn't just fork, they were a mangled mess. I thought the same as you, parsnip soup! However, cleaning them was such a nightmare. They had mud trapped in amongst all the mangled roots. I cleaned a couple and then gave up making soup after that. The rest were sliced up with a spade and chucked on the compost heap!

I tried this once. They did grow a bit, but clearly weren't happy. Won't try again.

I've had second thoughts about transplanting my extra parsnips, don't think I'll bother now. I only thought about it in the first place because last I couldn't get any to germinate then this year they've come through without any bother.

I've chucked some spare seeds on the top of a sort of mature compost heap, either I'm going to get 3 foot long parsnips... or nothing

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

It really is a case of if the alternative is to chuck 'em on the compost heap.....give it a go. Nothing whatsoever to lose!

I read somewhere (borrowed so many gardening books from the library over the winter!), that the book author did manage to transplant root veg, as long as the tap root wasn't pushing against edge of pot/module

OK you've convinced me to give them a go I'll put 5 or 6 of them into a tub, think its about a foot to 18 inch diameter.
