Have decided to have a go at pumpkins this year and got a little eager and they are now about in inch high.
I know i cant plant them out yet and they seem to be happy enough on my windowsil with peppers and toms for company.
But i was wondering if i could plant them out (when the time is ready) in grow bags?
I have a space all planned out for them in my garden with lots of room for them to crawl around in but will a grow bag be enough?

It's not ideal, but it might be doable if you can't plant them in the ground. You definitely need to feed them every fortnight with tomato fertiliser.

If you can get hold of a large size growbag (deeper than the standard size), you'l get a better crop. Even better, get a large plastic pot, cut the bottom off and insert it into a same-size hole in the growbag. Full the pot with multi-purpose compost and plant the pumpkin in the pot, that'll give the roots more room.

Which variety are you growing voddybabe? Is it a hard standing, soil or lawn area they will be growing on?

You may find it difficult to keep the grow bag watered when the plant is in full swing. At the same time they don't like to have saturated roots. I can only speak from my own thoughts though as I have never tried growing them in growbags.

You could try standing the growbag on its end and opening the top so there is more depth for the roots, but you need to put drainage holes in the bottom.

Or maybe stack two growbags on top of each other and cut a rectangular hole in the top of the bottom one and the bottom of the top one?

Fold growbag in half & cut across the middle. That'll give you two deep growbags for things that like deeper roots.

How about one of the big bendy buckets? They are not too dear and will give the roots lots of space to grow in...?

My only usable pumpkin last year was grown in a large bag similar to those used by the council for recycling, with a few holes punched in the base for drainage, held abot 30l of compost.

My council provides wheelie bins for recycling. Even better for pumpkins!
