Unknown spuds and missing seeds

We buy the supermarket cheap unmarked bags of spuds every week, often they are left under the counter in a large tin cooking pot, as always they chit, so this year we have decided to grow some in a container or two ( read large plastic bin ), is there anyway to find out what potatoes they actually are ?.

Secondly I decided to try growing some cucumbers, toms and melons this year, so I placed all the seeds into those multiple little square pots that you get in the local garden shop and erm they all seem to have disappeared. Not a seed to be seen in the pots, and they are in the greenhouse. Anyone got any idea where they may have gone. The French and broad beans are sprouting and so are the peas etc but no sign of the others anywhere....... weird., oh and as I am as usual broke, I used the compost from grow bags to start them in, is that ok ?

I wonder if it was too cold in your greenhouse to sow tender stuff like cucs, toms and melons.

It's not recommded to grow supermarket tatties as they aren't def virus free. You could google image tatties to see if one looks similar - think there are 400+ types!

Unless heated GH or you live somehwere hot, then it'll be too cold for your tomatoes etc. Best to sow and keep on windowsill. Once up, then can go out to GH through day and back at night.

Thanks for the replies. I live in Hampshire and I have one of those calor gas heaters in the greenhouse the temp never drops below 20c. Maybe I should of used some "real" seed growing medium.

Isn't is label requirement that the variety is listed or is that the country?

Either way check the bag carefully I have always found the variety on it even on the Tesco value version. If not when next shopping look at the actual shelf label as you should see country of origin and possibly the variety. Just looked at mine and it says "Saxon".

Yikes, you will be broke if you heat your GH to 20°C day and night!
It isn't really necessary to heat the GH to that extent. Mine is un-heated and I've had toms, melons, courgettes etc in there since march. It isn't much warmer here than in Hampshire.
You might find you get better results if you invest in a small electric propagator to get the seeds to germinate, then you can transfer them to the GH to get the best light.
