Shady Spot

Hi All,

This is my first attempt at growing veg. I will be growing stuff in the garden in containers/pots. One corner of the garden is quite shady - any suggestions of what I could grow there?

If you are growing in pots I would think by moving the pots around every few days (if you can be bothered) you won't need to worry about the shadey spot.

Quite sure that experienced grapes will give you better advice soon though.

Mmm, depends how shady really. Do you know roughly how many hours of light it would get in the summer? Lettuce would do okay, I have grown potatoes reasonably well in shade (though no huge crops) beetroots maybe? Welcome to the Vine BTW!

Hello Fatgaz, Shirlthegirl is right if you can be bothered to move the containers around and in really sunny days you can move the pots that don't want to stand in blazing sun (your salad crops) in there. Last year I had to put up sun shades to stop some things frying !

How shady is quite shady? And do you want to have pots there too, or plant into soil. Lettuce, radishes, mint, coriander, parsley all appreciate some shade and will bolt if baked. I'd reserve the real hot spots for things like tomatoes and chillies (and be prepared to provide water several times a day for pots)

I would guess that in the summer my 'shady spot' would get about 3 hours of sun
