Runner Bean sowing??

Hi veggies, i have baby boy coming next week (c section!!) and was hoping get ahead of myself and sow my runners and berlotto beans.
Has anyone got theres sown yet and are they in pots/outdoors in ground??

I was thinking of using paper tubes as i do with broad beans then planting straight in the ground, it worked well last year with the broadies..

Any advice gratefully recieved..
Should of mentiond its the OH who is actually giving birth!!!

Mine are in rootrainers as of 3 days ago.

Haven't started mine yet but they will be sown directly in the ground at the beginning of May.

I sowed my runner beans last weekend in 3" pots.

So your going to be a Daddy very soon then, Congratulations. Any chance of a photo of your little boy for us all to have a cluck at when he arrives ?

Put mine in 2 weeks ago in 3" pots in the blowaway. They are about an inch high and I'm hoping to plant them in the wigwam on Bank Holiday Monday, especially if this weather stays how it is predicted. If I'm planting seeds straight into the wigwam, I usually wait until May, but I'm trying it differently this year. Hope all goes well with the birth.

I planted mine last week in normal plant pots (i'm a novice too) but when the second set of leaves started to develop I moved them into the garden - that was 2 days ago and they seem to be ok so far.

Although we had a bit of frost last night and they aren't covered, so fingers crossed.

Glad you clarified that it is the OH having the baby - I was considering calling you mad until that point.

I'll probably sow mine in tubes too - I seem to be doing a lot of that this year. Don't know when yet as time seems a bit sparse.

newborn babies "tend" to sleep alot (unless you have a freak of nature as we did )

So i'm sure once your new arrival is alseep and the buzz of people have calmed down you'll be back sowing!

I sown mine yesterday in loo rolls and they'll be staying in the greenhouse until after the frost.

I sowed my Runners into rootrainers in the middle of March, and planted them out at the weekend. They have plastic bottle cloches on, and I add a layer of fleece at night. I had to plant them out, they were getting too big.

My Borlotti's went into root trainers two/three weeks ago and are up and thriving (I love the way the bean stays as part of the plant initially). I have been leaving them out all day since sowing but read that they are not frost hardy so they go back into the plastic 4-tier greenhouse of a night, probably til the end of the month. My runners - first year I planted them the last week in June (just got the lottie and seeds were donated) and I had the most amazing crops right until the end of September. Last year I grew them in pots in May and planted out a few weeks later - they got covered in blackfly and hardly produced anything (although this seems to be a widespread problem last year). This year, with the 'I told you so' of my experienced plot neighbour in mind....I'll not be starting them off until late May bank holiday (if I can manage to hold off until then!).

I think you'll be fine if you sow them in pots. They won't need planting out for weeks - in fact they'll be a couple of weeks before there's much to see at all.

Sowed my runners on Tuesday night in root trainers but not done the bolotti yet - think that's a job for this weekend. Will sow those in root trainers too but also some direct at the end of May.
