I usually leave mine til they hit the top of the supports, and then nip the growing tip off.
If pinching them out when they're small is supposed to make them branch out? then I wouldn't bother because I'm not that fond of runners, I only grow them for the OH

Last year I pinched mine out before they got to the top of their supports and the swine kept on growing for about another 3 foot. They ended up looking like a smoke trail coming out of the top of a teepee.
Only pinch them out when they get to the top of the canes, find they're bushy enough without any further assistance.
