shhhh....can we stop making my crown feel inadequate? He's only in his second year and only got ten inches on the tallest one.

The other one has just broken ground. I want crumble

(and pie, and ice cream, and wine)....

It is still bit early for outside grown rhubarb.
Hate to break this to you but my single crown is looking more and more like a triffid with each passing hour.

Very nice rhubarb crumble we had for tea and the plant doesn't look like its been touched!.

I have a load of crowns outside that will be ready to pick this weekend and I have three "rescued" crowns from a customers garden in my tunnel which I have been picking from for the last fortnight.
Though having said that, all the gardens I work at have rhubarb patches and none are as far on as my own.

Am I right in thinking that some varieties are very early, Sewer Rat?

You are, but as all my crowns were inherited from various places, I have no idea at all what varieties I have - but they are all scrummy. I don't think any of my crowns are particularly early, just the ones in the tunnel are a bit spoilt when it comes to shelter and watering (and planted in a trench filled with at least a foot of 5 year old manure

If we are talking rhubarb, can I ask a really dumb but necessary question please ? How is it best harvested ? Do I pull or cut the stalks off ?

Pull the stalks! This prevents the rest of the stalk rotting and possibly damaging the rest of the plant.
Didn't take note of the prices in T***o today, but their rhubarb didn't look forced - hardly any pink and plenty of green to the stalks - just like my outdoor stuff . Don't understand why anyone would pay the kind of prices mentioned above for it! (maybe the same people who buy extortionately priced blackberries?)
