I have 4 crowns. The 3 at the allotment are thinner, less pink and ready really early - we've been eating crimbles for a month. Don't know the variety. At home I have Stockbridge Arrow - very thick deep red stalks. We had the first of this last weekend. It does depend very much on the variety. I lover Stockbridge Arrow - really colourful and sweet - at this time of year.

I bought a nice healthy crown of Victoria in the local nursery this morning

I tried jogging, but I couldn't keep the ice in my glass.

You should check out the price of Jerusalem Artichokes. We can't get rid of the damn things but Sainsbury are charging £1.49 for 4 of them!

My main crown (the mature one) is a bit slow this year probably because it was forced last year and is just recovering and the other 2 are not ready yet for heavy picking. So Lady S. says to me ''Go down the local not-quite-a-supermarket and get us some rhubarb cos some family are coming tomorrow and we can pretend it is 'ome grown". Actually she didn't put it quite like that but this is a very boring story.

The upshot was that I went down to the village store for rhubarb but didn't bother when I was offered 300gms of chopped up bits for £2.30. No thank you. I bought a couple of tins of peaches and a jam sponge.
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

The plant up at my allotment has given me my first crop at the weekend and I enjoyed it as a little tarte tatin with homemade puff pastry and a dollop of mascarpone on top. A bit rich though!

Tarte tartin? Home made puff pastry? Mascarpone? All I'm allowed is stewed with saccharin and a dollop of low cal yoghurt. The closest comment I can get is 'Hrrrrumph'.

                I can't believe my eyes.

There must be a bit of a gap in the market I reckon, for early cheap rhubarb.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

My neighbour has a patch about 12 foot across and 6 ft deep and hardly takes any. I spoke with him at the weekend and asked if he would use it and if not coud I have some and he told me to take as much as I liked as they weren't that keen. 12lbs later it looks like I've not touched it so I'm off back next weekend for some more. I've frozen it in Kg bags and made my first jam ever last weekend of Rhubarb and Ginger. Everyone who's tasted it says it's lovely so I'm on a mission now and have just planted a root of ginger with some nodules on to see if I can grow that too!!!
Time flies especially when you are at the allotment!!

What do you do for a living? I do fairly long hours and find a wee bit of time now and then! Got made redundant last year from an engineering job and now set up as a gardener. Great choice! (nowt to do with rhubarb though),

Any other nice recipes out there?
