You wanna know how to germinate sweetcorn?

You stick it on a plate with kitchen paper on it, water the paper with WARM water and cover with cling film.
I got my seeds last Thursday, put them in straight away and they germinated yesterday.

That's at the most........ THREE AND A HALF days, need any more reason?

I did a lickle test with morning glory seeds. Same as you put them on kitchen roll but used boiled water straight from the kettle. 2 days later, everyone has germinated, I expected them to die.

Push Sweetcorn seed into rootrainer of compost. Stand rootrainers in seed tray. Water. Put in Greenhouse. They grow.

Well, mine did! Probably all die now!

But there is a good chance of them rotting that way, I get 100% germination this way.

Having to do this because I forgot to pre germinate the first lot and a third rotted

Have to say I pre-germinate all of my large seeds in kitchen roll, not only does it satisfy my impatient nature but also I'm not wasting compost just for the seeds to rot.

New to all this gardening lark so I just poped mine in some compost in a toilet roll middle. Put them on a sunny window cill in the kitchen........three days later they were pokeing their heads through.....maybe its just beginners luck

I put mine in a heated prop, and they were up within a matter of days too.. 13/14 germinated, so will be sowing my next batch soon. WIll try your method though!

Definately damp kitchen paper in the airing cupboard for me. Last year, two batches all rotted before I tried this method. They all survived and produced a fantastic crop .

I don't have an airing cupboard, I usually just use cold water and they normally take a week, week and a half, two weeks sometimes.
Using the warm water seems to have kick started them.
The kitchen is the same temp as usual, so it can't have been that.

If you're having a lot of problems with rotting seeds then you're watering too much. I'm quite lazy by nature and therefore probably don't water some things enough but it does mean that I don't get problems with rotting. As somebody further up has said, they're fine just shoving in moist root trainer compost (loo rolls good too ). Did mine last week and most are already through, sat on the side in the conservatory. I find that to chit means that I have to do two actions to sow rather than just one and as I said, I'm a bit lazy so that sounds like hard work

i sowed mine straight into the ground at my lottie last year and 85% germinated, of those 95% made it to cob no need to pre-germinate, but i am going to try this just for the sake of it

And you get to use the strongest and most vigorous of your seeds. I practically pre germinate everything except Carrots, Lettuces and Onions with little or no probs, with brassicas which I grow on in small pots, I usually gently squeeze the soil around the seed to make sure its not in an air pocket as they're tiny and can easily dry out - jobs a goodun
