  • Onion sets and Peas

Having just planted a row of onion sets between 2 rows of peas to save space. I have just read that you should not grow these 2 vegetables together. Is this correct and if so why?

I just found this on the internet...

Keep onions out of the pea and bean patch. Onions and their close relative, shallots, stunt the growth of all types of beans and peas

However I grow mine together and always get a bumper crop; the only time I've ever had pea problems [stop it!] there were no onions anywhere near....so I will continue to grow mine together [I can't afford not to - I grow lots of both of them].

I'm a bit worried your onions will be swamped by the peas though -- they grow rather big.

But I'm grumpy with peas this year. My chitting ones went mouldy and of the ones planted direct I've so far got nine plants... I'll stick some more out when it stops raining.

Never heard of this bit of 'wisdom'. When it flies in the face of people's direct experience I shall ignore it!

Last year I planted some shallots with some runner beans and I found that the beans did well but the shallots were a bit pathetic which is the opposite of what they say so who knows?

All the books by "experts" say don't do it but many with experience will disagree. I have broad beans alongside my autumn planted onion sets and both are doing fine.
