do any weeds look like lettuces?

Some of you may recall ages ago I scraped all the mud and gunge out of the chook run and chucked it into my oldest raised bed. Having decided that this bed really needs to be emptied and made smaller, I wandered up the garden to start work. I noticed that in the weeds growing on the mound created by said chook run clearing there are a few that really resemble lettuce seedlings.

What does everyone else think....

That's what I thought but I haven't grown lettuces for ages and ages and even then they failed. Where the heck could they have appeared from if they are lettuces?

They look like lettuce to me as well Shirl.
Did you given the chook's lettuce that had gone to seed? Why not try one of the leaves to see what they taste like.

Definitely lettuce, you don't get leaves that colour in the wild.

they taste green and need a lot of salad cream!! not sure what to do but I suppose it won't take a lot to transplant them and see what happens.

I have never had a lettuce grow well enough to go to seed so have no idea where they have appeared from

Could the seed have been in there feed shirl or is the run where you've tried to grow lettuce before???

Not sure if there is lettuce seed in chook feed but the run has definately never had lettuce grown in it for the past 15 years at least.

It looks like endive to me, bitter tasting, can survive light frosts. They are usually in the mixed salad bags from supermarkets.
