Despite thinking I had researched everything about asparagus before planting I've just read that I was supposed to 'earth up' asparagus crowns in a similar way to potatoes. I made a lovely trench with mound in the centre then completely buried them! Have I made a huge mistake or will they grow through the compost and manure?

No need to grow asparagus on ridges unless you are on easily waterlogged land. Burying them too deep is a problem though. usually I do about 2" down at a time mulching up aiming for about 6" down by November and then a 3-4" mulch each Winter.
How long have they been in?....How deep dig you put them.
If you want to have ridges you can always earth them up in a couple of years when the plants are stronger.

Oh crumbs - I've done the same thing! I was weeding the bed today wondering when the foliage will emerge and what it will look like so I don't hoe it off by mistake. Am I right in thinking it is feathery? Looks like I will have to scrape some of the soil off too.
