    Before I make a planting boo boo can someone tell me what group fennel comes under. Thanks(seeds in hand ready to sow!!!!)

        I grow bulb fennel with the aliums... don't know if that's definitely correct though.

          I grow florence (bulb) fennel with beetroot etc. I sow in June in loo roll middles(cut in half) then plant out the whole thing once it's got going.

            Thanks I will try alongside beetroot. I meant the bulb type incidentally. I haven't grown it in modules before as I always thought it hated disturbance.

              If you use loo rolls you can pop the whole thing in the ground so your not disturbing the roots.

                Hmm.... I was told fennel is a devil to grow, constantly bolting etc, so didnt bother

                  I have grown fennel before quite successfully though keeping it watered is key as yes it bolts fairly easily. As it is good in salads and cooked,its dual purpose makes it a useful veg. Worth a try northepaul.

                    The latest GYO mag (June issue) has an article about fennel. It advises sowing fennel in late June to avoid bolting, and also lists some bolt-resistant varieties
