My onion sets both normal and red ones have been planted in the soil for a while now, however I've not seen much growth over the past weeks apart from the top shoots that are about six inches high on each set. On close inspection last night it seems that each and every set has shriveled. A gentle squeeze has shown that there is no firmness at all to the bulb.
I first started off all the sets in a tray of compost to allow for good root growth prior to planting out.
The soil in the bed is not the best and wasn't prepared in advance last Autumn but thought that onions were not that fussy anyway. last year I had a good crop in a different part of the lotty and the soil is much the same there.
Anyone any ideas on what has went wrong.
Should I pull them all out and try replanting new sets or is it too late now?
Help much appreciated
