Out with the fleece again!

More frosts forecast for the next few nights so I’ve covered 4 rows of potatoes and managed to drag 4 heavy containers full into the greenhouse. Had to leave another 5 containers outside to fend for themselves but the tatties in them are just showing so I covered them with grass clippings. Fingers crossed.

Don't know about anybody else but I'm starting to get just a little fed up with it all. You'd think after a hard winter nature would give us a break

Well I must be soft because I am still fleecing everything every night even if frost isn't on the cards!

And the other night I ended up getting out of bed at 1am because I had decided to leave them and then chickened out and was worried that they'd all die for my laziness!

I am fed up with it too. As a newbie, my plant-and-hope-for-the-best approach could do with a bit more help from nature than this.

I just posted a similar thread. 2 to 3 degrees forecast over next four nights here - at this level am I right to be worried? I have taken the precaution of bringing pots in or covering anyway.

I've found my allotment germination rate shave been v hampered by the cold - my poor little beetroot are barely coming up and the herbs in the permanent bed are taking their time to green up again :-(
Not looking good for my long season maturation needed for squash!!

I've put my heater in the greenhouse for the next few nights. Some of my toms already have small fruit on and I really don't want them to be knocked back or even worse, frozen to death.
Fed up with the cold here as well.

Spent about an hour this evening covering everything up, bound to have forgotten some poor little plant but have now run out of fleece, bubblewrap, cardboard, windosill space and gh space!!!

I have acquired some plastic bottles, cut in half, keep screew cap on to cover smaller seedlings. Also for larger seedlings just cut top off and cover. I find this helps for frost protection and also mini cloche for daytime

Forgot about the bottles, used those for a few French beans I had put in a pot that were spares. Have also used plastic packaging from sent plug plants for mini cloches and also the sort of containers you get with cakes that have flip top lids, make a good tent like cloche.

I have an enviromesh tunnel over my celery bed and upturned large plantpots oversome of the spuds in buckets as they are now too high to earth up the other spud buckets are hidden under a large canvas sack..
Everything else in polycarb GH & hoping for the best.

Wasn't it last May when we had a heatwave and no rain for weeks?

Worried! I only have a limited amount of fleece between 3 raised beds! Any ideas what i should cover? looks like my potatoes have some black on the leaves - is this caused by frost/cold wind. brassicas look ok.....

Jackbb - I'd go for the spuds and anything tender - brassicas can hold their own as can broad beans but other beans etc need the help (and any squashes etc). Rake through the other frost threads on the go at the moment for more info. Think this cold snap has really got to us all!!
