  • Pumpkins in Pots!!!

    Good Afternoon

All my gardens are slabbed, gravelled or have slate so I grow everything in pots of varying colours and sizes. I've just been given some pumpkin plant so wondered if they would grow and mature OK in a container.

Hey there im in the same situation and I also have to grow them in containers. I bought a recycled grow bag which has a volume of about 180 litres, I will be growing 1 or 2 plants in each and see they get along!

Depending which sort of pumpkin (ie small or giant) I would suggest one of those bendy buckets, filled with good compost or well rotted manure. If its a large one, you probably only want one in the pot.

Don't forget to make drainage holes in the bottom of the container.

What size pot were you thinking of growing your pumpkin in? And what variety is your pumpkin, it might not be the size of the pot that's the problem, but the space you give your pumpkin to grow in. Some pumpkins literally take over your entire garden so be prepared for total garden domination

I wouldn't plant a pumpkin in anything smaller than a half barrel!

My only decent pumpkin last year was grown in a wide topped bag similar to those used by some councils for recycling. It held about 20 litres or so of compost and had a few holes stabbed in to allow drainage. The pumpkin weighed about 7lb

Thank you all for your replies. Unfortunately I don't know how big the pumpkins will be as I was given the plants. It will be exciting to see how they developed. Growing them in a council bag appeals as it means I can get something out of them rather than the other way round
