  • Hestia Dwarf runner beans

I seeded Hestia Dwarf runner beans but only a couple took - not sure why as never grown them before but I really want to be able to grow them as my Dad always did runner beans in our family garden. He sadly passed away in October 2009 after a brave battle with cancer so one of my top veg to grow is Hestia Dwarf runner beans so I am very disappointed when they did not take.

So I got some more seeds at the RHS Malvern Show this weekend (great show!). Just wondered is it too late to try and seed some more?

Thanks for your advice and help :-)

It is not too late at all - remember that runner beans hate the cold, and it has been cold! You can sow another batch either in pots, or you can direct sow.

What a lovely thing to do to remember your dad

Did you sow indoors or outside? I'd do inside then, if you've got a greenhouse put them out once they germinate, otherwise keep them on a window sill (with some foil behind to maximise light) for a week or two and fingers crossed the weather will warm up and they can go out.

I sowed them inside the greenhouse so I will sow some more tomorrow and keep them in the greenhouse.

Thanks so much for your replies.

I have some hestia too, and they took an age to germinate - about 3 weeks, in my sunny lean-to, but it has been cold, esp at night. I would suggest re-sowing and seeing what happens.
Nice way to remember your dad

My runner beans have been outside since the end of March, now a lovely shade of yellow and refusing to grow I'm sure your dad would be very proud of you for trying and I wish you better luck and more patience than me!

I planted my Hestia seeds back in the middle of March in my conservatory and they grew really well. I have been hardening them off whenever I can and last weekend I took the brave decision to plant them out.....I am a first year grower so I am experimenting along the way.....I have planted one in a 18" pot, one in a 12" pot and one in the ground. I checked them this morning before work (after a cold night) and they seem to be holding up well. I have still got three plants in the warm, just in case.

Good luck with your Hestias GrowingVegRocks.
