Zucchini F1 germination

Hi all,

I sowed 6 zucchini F1 seeds on 30th April in a windowsill propagator, and none have reared their heads through the soil yet. What is the usual time for germination?

A gentle "dig" in two pots tonight revealed one healthy looking but inactive seed, and in the other I dislodged a seed with a root - hoorah! but I hope the disturbance hasn't killed it off. Left the others alone.

I had such problems with germinating cucurbits last year, that I stuck them all on a heated pad this year and they all came through really quickly, just as the melon I put on did as well.
I shall be doing that in future, do them all at once on the heated propagator base in larger pots, with clingfilm over the top.

I've just had my courgettes germinate in 5 days (unheated greenhouse, min of 10C at night). The pumpkins are much slower though: still not poking their heads up

My corgettes were rubbish at germinating last year, I was blaming using old seed. But... the new seed has got a couple of days to show its head before I'm annoyed.

Mind you, perhaps the unheated greenhouse and its min temp of 1 or 2C over the last week might not be helping. Might try again in the house.

My courgettes took about a month cold nights I believe is the reason!

A little bit of bottom heat works wonders for most of the tender vegetables.

Thanks all. Good news is that one has come through now! touch wood there may be more on the way. The seeds I used were "Carters" brand which were half the price of the other 's and I wondered about the quality of the seed and thought this might be the problem - but surely a seed is a seed right?
