Multi-purpose is fine for crops that will be ready over summer but if you want to grow leeks or PSB or any other winter crop which will spend a long time in the container, I'd opt for a John Innes No 1 - this contains an element of soil which means it won't dry out so quickly and will hold nutrients for a bit longer.
The beauty of container growing is that you can tailor the growing medium to suit the crop. Sewer Rat's right about the John Innes but I mix my own stuff from topsoil and MPC with leaf mould or well rotted compost. To that I add BFB and for brassicas I add a little wood ash which makes it a little more alkaline. For carrots/parsnips I use a mix of very fine sandy soil and riddled MPC with a general fertilizer. It works for me.
