Here's my first batch of Runner Beans, (Desiree, Sunset and Lady Di), Dwarf French Beans (Purple Teepee, and Bolotto Di Vigevano), and finally some Harricot Beans (Fagiolo Rampicante Meraviglia Di Venezia G.B).

The plants have been outside on the patio during the day (weather permitting) and inside at night. I'll be planting some more in situ, at the end of the month, and hopefully I'll get a decent crop from them.

The ideal growing temp for runner beans is 14-19c. French beans like it even warmer

Sorry, I can't wait until the end of June to get mine out this year!

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I planted my beans in the pots the day before yesterday.I'm watching the weather-if the temperature is going to drop at night,I'll bring them home.I thought about planting them in situ straight away and then remembered slugs-they won't give beans a chance.So-pots for me(always can bring them home)and not to plant too early-no point as if it's too cold they won't grow,if it's warm enough they'll soon catch up.

Not sowing my runners until June - first year at the allotment I was given some beans to stick in the ground in late June (literally July!) and I had absolutely bags full of them all summer into the beginning of October. Last year I sowed in May, planted out at end of May and suffered untold horrible black fly problems in early summer and had terrible pollination (I think that was a general problem everyone had last year though) and really did not even have enough beans to go round. So this year I'm back to following the wise words of my allotment neighbour/guru and not planting til June. They catch up so quickly in the right growing conditions.

This is a very interesting thread.

I have just planted my Hestias (thanks Northepaul) outside tonight in a trough with some dwarf sunflowers. I hope they survive - its been so hot today and the temps tonight here say 12, think the nights will be cooler next week so may have to bring them in again, but for tonight I think I will just put some bubblewrap around.
