Mildest Chillie?

I'd like to grow some chillies this year; but they'd need to be the mildest type as OH isn't a great fan of anything too hot. Wondered if other grapes could tell me the best type to go for with mellow heat rather than eyewatering effects!

I hope Pigletwillie answers your thread here, because his Red Hot Cherry Pappadew-type peppers were brilliant last year. And I know he's been offering seed to Grapes. They were like a Sweet Pepper, but with a very mild Chilli 'hit'. Trousers and I loved them....

Hello Muckdiva, and Wellie, sorry I missed out on Piglets offer of Pappadew - sounds good. I haven't tried the results yet, but I'm growing Jalapeno and Hungarian Hot Wax as I believe they're not too hot. Can't vouch as not tasted the results yet. Also growing Newmex Big Jim for the competition, also said to be mild, suitable for stuffing and eating, but finding them a bit fiddly to grow. I think I better not try anything else unless I want to turn into a chillie nut. But I'll watch this space and probably end up growing one more !

Hi Muckdiva,
I'd recommend hungarian Hot Wax. It just has a little chilli taste. My husband hates hot peppers but is quite happy with this one.

I'm sure Piglet wouldn't mind sending you a few Pappadews? There was a thread on the seed-swap maybe? If not, I'm sure he wouldn't mind a PM.
Personally, I've completely cocked up the seed I'd saved, given I let the promiscuous little peppers and chillis 'do their own thing', within the greenhouse last summer, without separating them (you live and learn, eh?!)
and the resulting Pappadew seeds have completely refused to germinate.
C'est la vie ! You win some, you lose some !

There are a few peppadew seeds left, mine have germinated wellie, about a 60% germination rate though. I also have some red hot cherry seed Alice and Muckdiva which lose most of the heat when cooked if required.

Would love to try the Peppadew and red hot cherry seeds Pigletwillie, they sound like just the job. The word 'Hot' is so subjective isn't it; I tried a chillie in a Tesco Green Thai Curry set the other day (I'm sure the pack said it was medium heat or spice, or whatever you describe these things as), but even the tiniest bit of this (albeit raw) was unbearable to eat. A friend said it looked a lot like a birds eye chillie, which she thought was one of the hottest types, but couldn't be sure. Certainly a lot hotter than anything I'd want to grow myself...

Wellie, what do you mean about letting the little wotsits doing their own thing? I bought a pack of 10 different types of chilli seeds from e-bay. Plus I have already got sweet pepper seeds. Can't I grow them all in the greenhouse..........or does their shenanigins only affect the seed?
Really, I haven't a clue what I'm doing!

Hi Jools !

They'll grow alright, it's just that evidently Peppers and Chillis are on the promiscuous side or get cross-polinated or something, so any seed that you save to sow the following year, won't necessarily come true to type.

Clear as mud now, eh !..... but that's the jist of it until someone rather more eloquent on the subject comes along!

PW thank you very much, the chilli seeds arrived so quickly! I will start them off straight away and let you know how they get along.

Thanks to everyone else for all the advice, had to laugh about the goings on in Wellie's greenhouse - so will try and keep these plants separate!

Would you have any peppadew seeds left? OH absolutely loves the ones you get in tesco, but I can't find the seeds anywhere. I have millions of other seeds if you want some in return... Thank!

I've got some chilli seeds called meak and mild......I think they were formT&M
They're supposed to be the mildest chilli flavour. I've never tried them before but am thinking of starting them off inside in the next week or so.
